Caving and archery at Runways End for Beavers

Oct 2014: We visited Runways End in Aldershot for an evening of caving and archery. The Beavers were split into two groups and did 45 minutes of each activity. We had two brilliant leaders for the evening, Mick took the caving group and after a quick safety briefing and collection and fitting of helmets and gloves we were off! The caving experience was great fun, we learnt about how to keep safe, how to fit in very small places and played some games. Wayne took us for archery and again, after a quick safety briefing we were all taking our turns at shooting at the targets. We all improved our aim over the course of the evening. We worked over four stations which meant there were plenty of turns each. All the Beavers were so well behaved, they listened to instructions and helped each other-would highly recommend an evening at Runways End-we all had fun and learned new skills.

District Climbing Competition

A big thank you to all who attended the District Climbing Competition last Sunday. We had 4 Cubs who took part and 5 Scouts. A big congratulations to Avril Varndell who took second place for Cubs and Maya Hearfield who took third place for Scouts.

Also in the Cubs competition with 18 competitors, Harry Hogg took 5th place, followed by Noah Zouita and Alex Keogh. In the Scouts competition, with 13 competitors, James Keogh took 5th position, closely followed by Loren Varndell in 6th place with Jenson Varndell and Jake Davids following just behind.

An excellent result, well done Cubs and Scouts! Full results will be pinned on the noticeboard.

Interpack Cub Football Tournament

We saw some amazing performances from the boys who gave 110%. They threw themselves into every tackle, ran up and down some pretty big pitches non stop all afternoon, braved severe downpours and still walked off the pitches smiling even when “Batman” had run them ragged!

We won 1, drew 1 and lost the remaining matches, but the results were very close indeed.

Very impressive for a team of varying abilities, especially considering that one player was struggling with an injury, some had been away all week on school trips and others had already played football and done other clubs that morning!  Well done all of you.  A big thank you goes out to my assistant coach who helped prep the boys during the tournament and all the parents who stayed and encouraged the team on.

Pilgrims’ Way Hike

May Bank Holiday saw 5th Farnham (Bourne) Scouts participating in a Group family hike along the Pilgrim’s Way from Guildford Cathedral to Farnham.  Precisely 99 walked, plus a baby wheeled, with most Scouts starting at Guildford, taking the scenic but slightly longer Wey South Path to the North Downs Way.  Lunch was amidst the beautiful rolling scenery at Puttenham Golf Club, bathed in sunshine by the Cricket Green where the Cubs joined Scouts for a picnic before setting out to meet Beavers in The Sands.  With one of the nicest days of the year so far and bluebells out in full bloom, spirits were high and the 14 miles were covered with ease and happy smiles right to the end.  A run was even managed in Bourne Green at the end of the route – the sight of the chips proved enough for another burst of energy and a reward for their fantastic efforts.

Tilford Greenfield Camp

Monday and Tuesday Troops combined on the 8th & 9th March for an amazing greenfield camp in the woods behind the church at Tilford. The site was in a beautiful clearing in the woods, providing a perfect setting for the campfire in the evening, with a clear and star filled sky, followed by clear blue skies and sunshine during the day. The Scouts cooked lunch and dinner over the open fire they’d set up and toasted marshmallows later in the evening while relaying jokes and songs around the campfire before bed. The following day, they hiked with bags almost as big as them, back to the Scout Hut.
